This extended essay examines the relationships between “Virtual Reality” and “Reality” that is lived. It draws upon writings of contemporary philosophers of technology: Jaron Lanier (computer philosophy writer, computer scientist and visual artist), Jonathan Steuer (research in defining virtual reality in terms of human experience), Marie-Laure Ryan (research in narratology, fiction and cyberculture) and Michael Heim (also known as the philosopher of cyberspace), with reference to the acknowledged writings of Baudrillard, Descartes, John Locke and Aristotle, and asks - through a series of reflections upon essays, books, publications, interviews, devices and computer games – where is the border between the real and the virtual? Chapter 1 reviews the Reality, drawing upon Phenomenalist, Idealist and Solipsist theories of reality as well as writings of Aristotle, Descartes and Locke emphasising the empirical aspect of the knowledge and impossibility of defining the borders of reality itself. Chapter 2 reviews Virtual Reality from both phenomenological and technological point of view, looking at latest developments, ongoing research in this area and the possible future application of VR, reflecting on the writings of Jaron Lanier, David Chalmers. Chapter 3 brings Virtual reality and Reality together through discussion on the nature of experience, immersion, perception and telepresence, using writings of Marie-Laure Ryans, Pierre Levy, Michael Benedikt, Jonathan Steuer and Michael Heim.
