Once upon a time, in a far-off land, there lived a poor miller and his son. They were struggling to make ends meet and had nothing but a cat. However, this cat was no ordinary feline. He was clever and cunning, always finding ways to get what he wanted. One day, the miller's son found a pair of boots that belonged to his father. They were dusty and old, but the cat saw the potential.

They were dusty and old, but the cat saw the potential. He approached the miller's son and proposed a plan. "If you give me those boots, I will help turn our fortunes around," said the cat.

A Pocket Full of Witches

I’m sure most of us girls have experienced this conversation at some point in life.. but have you ever stopped to wonder just why we’re so enthralled to have such a simple inclusion in our garments? Why is it you can fit a million hands in one pocket of men’s jeans, yet for women you’re lucky to fit three fingers?! Let’s delve into the curious history of the simple pocket.

A 'witch' burned at the stake from a mid 19th century book

Pockets were first constructed in the 17th century, yet this luxury only extended to men. Women instead carried round a small pouch on a string which tied around their waist, often hidden underneath their petticoats. However, women with such ‘pockets’ were soon to be accused of witchcraft; storing curses and spells within them to cause mayhem among unsuspecting citizens. What was the consequence of such an alleged offence? Burning at the stake.
The trend of pockets for women was soon short lived, causing their men to carry around their personal items for them.

Fast forward to 2021 and still ladies’ garments are seldom seen with pockets. Nowadays, the witch is an emblem which signifies strength among womankind, with female protesters dressing up as witches to fight against sexism. So we say, fill our pockets with as much as we can ladies!

I have to admit, when I find a dress and it has pockets, while still fitting well and looks flattering, I do a little happy dance. I’ve never liked pockets in my pants, in fact, I always had them sown shut. They never laid right and they were NEVER deep enough to hold anything anyway. I never got it. They always seemed pretty pointless.

Curious, the miller's son agreed to the cat's plan. Little did he know, the cat had a magical power that would prove instrumental in their journey. After putting on the boots, the cat announced that he would become the Marquis of Carabas and set off to make his owner's dreams come true. The clever cat went to the king's palace and used his magic to transform into a dashing nobleman. He approached the king and impressed him with his wit and charm. The cat convinced the king that his master, the miller's son, owned vast lands and wealth. Intrigued, the king invited the miller's son and his cat to his castle. With each visit to the king's palace, the cat devised new schemes to enhance his master's image. The cat would go hunting and catch rabbits, pheasants, and other animals. He would present them to the king as gifts, showcasing the supposed wealth of his master's lands. One day, the cat heard about the Ogre's castle, full of riches. He eagerly approached the Ogre and revealed his plan to conquer the castle. With his wit and charm, the cat convinced the Ogre to transform into a mouse. As soon as the transformation took place, the cat pounced on the mouse and devoured it. Now in possession of the castle, the cat quickly arranged a meeting with the king. He told the king that this magnificent castle also belonged to his master, the Marquis of Carabas. The king was astonished by the miller's son's apparent wealth and rewarded him further. With his master now rich and respected, the cat continued to use his quick thinking and magical boots to ensure their prosperity. He arranged for his master to marry the king's daughter, securing their position in the kingdom. And so, the miller's son and his cat lived happily ever after, thanks to the cat's cleverness and magical boots. Their rags-to-riches story became a legend, inspiring many others to believe in the power of cunning and wit..
