Magic Ears Tips: How to Record Between Classes!

When I first started at Magic Ears, I found recording feedback painfully slow, especially because it was unpaid. But it doesn't have to stay slow. With pre-booked classes, I can often get all or much of my feedback done between classes.

I can often get all or much of my feedback done between classes.
  • Nailing class progress
  • Entering subsequent classes immediately
  • Using multiple windows for quick access
  • Grouping like recordings
  • Having comment templates ready to go
  • Foregoing perfectionism.

Cheers to less slave labor!

Nail Class Timing

Class progress is a bottom line at Magic Ears, but it also determines whether or not there are 5 minutes in which to leave feedback. Of course the main solution is practice. But here’s a tip I find helpful. Writing notes for key times. For me, the most helpful time to mark down is the slide before Let’s Play/Let’s Talk (the Thou Shalt Not Pass until 18 minutes slide). I write this on a whiteboard positioned just above my laptop’s webcam. It’s easy to sneak peeks at it while my gaze stays on the camera. Nailing class progress will open a world of feedback time, but to get the full 5 minutes there’s another important step.

Enter Your Next Class IMMEDIATELY

Signing into your next class 28 seconds before it’s due to begin and finding it’s already been transferred is the worst. as first-world ESL problems go. When squeezing recordings in between classes, signing into your next class immediately, provides extra minutes before the system preemptively marks you as absent for not being early enough.

How to record feedback while already in your next class:

  • Close your camera
  • Mute your mic
  • Mute your students/speakers/headphones (if you don’t want to be shouting over them while recording)

NOTE: If you’re as accident prone as myself, make an explicit mental note to unmute before starting class.

Now you're ready to open all your student evaluations in new windows.

Befriend Multiple Windows

As the shark in Finding Nemo says, “Fish are friends…” but windows are better friends. To save time, have your comment templates and class feedback windows already open, ready to go. Right click on each evaluation to open all four in New Windows.

  1. I keep the My Class Tab open in the browser
  2. I don’t teach with my classroom full screen for easy browser access (obviously optional, but how I roll)
  3. I open my comments templates before I begin teaching. although, I teach with it minimized.

Group Like Recordings

If you find yourself recording the same feedback, except for changing students’ names. Leave the name out, open the two, three, or four student feedbacks that are identical and record them simultaneously. Click click click click aaaaaad talk. I line up all the recording buttons in small windows so there isn’t an awkward long opening pause while I scramble for buttons. Record. Then four submission-clicks. Done!

Use Comment Templates

I find prewriting comment templates saves me a lot of time. If you’re having trouble recording off the cuff, write a feedback script into which you can plug personalizations and specific keywords/vocabulary. You may wish to have different templates for different levels.

It might look something like this:

Leave Perfectionism to Fresco Painters

If you haven’t said anything rude or incomprehensible, your recording is likely good enough. If you stutter one word, it’s up to you, but don’t feel like you MUST re-record. For your opening greeting, if there isn’t a student-name provided, or if you’re not sure how to pronounce the name, you can jump straight over to “Hi! This is Teacher ___”. Our feedback is one of many our students will receive; it needn't be treated with the precision of a Sistine Chapel.
