Why Is A Mascot Getting Hurt Funny?

Mississippi State mascot Bully was hit by an ESPN golf cart during yesterday's Ole Miss-Mississippi State game, injuring the leg of the person inside. The photo you see is Bully, still fully costumed, wearing an air cast and being taken away in a stretcher.

OK, this is not funny. This should not be funny. I should not be thinking about how Bully's frozen, anguished face accurately reflects the injury sustained by the person inside of it. This isn't—dammit, why is it funny?

On a serious note, may the person inside Bully experience a quick, easy recovery from injury. But let's look at the big question: Why is it amusing when a mascot gets hurt? Maybe I'm the only sociopath, but mascots that experience non-serious injuries are humorous. Let's be clear that I'm not wishing for more mascots to get hurt for my amusement, but sometimes, it happens. It's a workplace accident.

For example, remember Rocky, the Denver Nuggets mascot from the beginning of this month, who was unconscious while getting lowered in a harness to the court in front of scores of fans? Once I found out Rocky was all right, I could not stop watching the GIF. I started playing this song from The Dark Knight Rises behind it because it matched so well. And the cheerleaders! The cheerleaders dancing around as his oversized shoes met the floor and the people around him slowly realized that something wasn't right with Rocky.

Meet Rocky, The Denver Nuggets Unconscious Mascot

Denver Nuggets fans got the rare opportunity to see what appeared to be a lifeless person dressed as a mountain lion lowered from the rafters. Rocky the mascot, passed out as he was being lowered during Friday’s pre-game introductions. When he reached the court, he collapsed and laid on the floor. Later in honor of Rocky, the Nuggets also collapsed, losing to the Trail Blazers 113 – 98.

Watch Nuggets mascot clobber, taunt youth football player during Broncos-Cardinals game

Chances are that Rocky, the mascot for the Denver Nuggets, wouldn’t be able to get away with shoving a kid to the ground on a basketball court. But on a football field? He can do that, and throw in some taunting.

At halftime of Thursday’s Broncos-Cardinals game, played in Denver, the crowd was entertained by a youth football game. Also on hand were several mascots, including Rocky.

That’s when this happened:

Don’t do it, Rocky! Don’t do it! http://t.co/Kkr7Ybhfmm pic.twitter.com/y2WYsdzV2n — Deadspin (@Deadspin) September 4, 2015

That could have been seen as a terrible act of bullying, but the Internet preferred to applaud.

This is just the latest eyebrow-raising episode involving Rocky. Last year, he showed up at a rally for Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob Beauprez, which might have been okay, except that a Nuggets official later said that the appearance was “an unsanctioned, unpaid appearance that we had no knowledge of.”

In 2013, the Nuggets celebrated their home opener by having Rocky lowered to the floor from the rafters at Pepsi Center. The only problem was that, somewhere between getting into his harness and reaching the court, the mascot fell unconscious, leading to a disturbing scene for fans, especially young ones, in attendance.

One Internet observer surmised that Rocky was really a colt in lion’s clothing.

Reviews for "Discover the Magic: Exploring the Crayola Magic Art Pack's Special Effects"

1. Sarah - 2/5 - I was really disappointed with the Crayola magic art pack. The markers dried out way too quickly and I ended up having to replace them within a week. The paint set included was also not of good quality, as the colors were not vibrant and they didn't blend well. Overall, I found the art pack to be a waste of money and would not recommend it.
2. Mark - 1/5 - The Crayola magic art pack was a huge letdown. The washable crayons that were included did not work as advertised. They did not wash off easily from surfaces and I had to scrub hard to remove the marks. The coloring book that came with the pack was also very flimsy and the pages tore easily. I was very dissatisfied with the quality of this product.
3. Emily - 2/5 - I bought the Crayola magic art pack for my child, but it was not worth the price. The markers ran out of ink quickly and the colors were not as vibrant as expected. The paint set was also disappointing, as the paintbrushes provided were of poor quality and the colors did not show up well on paper. I would not recommend this art pack for children who are serious about art and creativity.
