First Year Seminar/Orientation
The First Year Seminar/ Orientation (FYS/O) is an important process to integrate the first- time incoming students into the university. At the University of Johannesburg (UJ), FYS/O follows a blended approach, meaning that you will have face-to-face sessions and online self-paced module to enrich the learning experiences. The online faculty and college module is hosted on Learner Management system called Blackboard. Attendance and participation is compulsory.
To participate in the blended orientation will require:
- To physically come to the campus where you are registered from to attend in person or face-to face sessions from 06 -10 February 2023
- To access the online orientation module, you will need a computer /Laptop/Tablet/iPad/ Smart cell phone as well as internet connectivity/Wi-fi/ data to access the self-paced online orientation module throughout the semester/year.
Who should attend?
All accepted and registered new or first entering UJ first year students.
Steps on how to participate in FYS/O:
Step 1: Register as a UJ Student
The first step is to register with the University for the Qualification you have been accepted for. If you are not registered yet follow the step-by-step registration guide below to legally register as a UJ student.
Once you have registered as a UJ student, you will receive a letter(s) from Central Academic Administration. In the letter(s), amongst other there is information regarding getting started as a first year student, there will be a link to join online guided blackboard sessions.
Enrolment into the orientation module will happen 24 hours after you have registered. The Centre for Academic Technologies will send you notification via SMS or e-mail alerting to the enrolment in the faculty or College specific orientation module. It is crucial to know which faculty you are registered in and the school you will be studying under.
Step 2: Attend the online Pre-Orientation sessions
To participate in the guided Blackboard and faculty specific orientation of the following gadgets is required:
Computer/Laptop/Tablet/iPad/Smart cellphone as well as internet connectivity or data to access the online orientation module.
The online guided blackboard sessions will assist you on how navigate Blackboard and faculty or college specific First Year Orientation module. The sessions will run from 2 to 11 February (excluding weekends). See the schedule below for dates and times:
Mon to Fri 30 Jan – 03 Feb
You are required to attend ONE session. However, if you feel that you need to attend more than once, you are free to do so.
Step 3: Attend the face-to-face session on campus from 06-10 February 2023

Physical Support Available
In the event that Covid-19 has been managed and students are expected to be back on campus, the University will ensure that physical support is available for first years upon arrival on campus. The First Year Experience office will put together the FYS/O team to help you navigate the campus and answer basic questions you may have. The team will be dressed in orange UJ safety vests with FYS printed at the back and caps for ease of identification (see image below).

I found "Uj oh its mabis" to be extremely confusing and poorly executed. The storyline was all over the place and it was hard to make sense of what was happening. The dialogue was nonsensical and the characters lacked depth. Overall, it felt like a complete waste of time and I would not recommend it to anyone.

I was really disappointed with "Uj oh its mabis". The whole film seemed like a random collection of scenes put together without any clear purpose or direction. The cinematography was subpar and the acting felt forced. I kept waiting for something interesting or engaging to happen, but it never did. I wouldn't say it was the worst film I've ever seen, but it definitely fell short of my expectations.
3. Mark - 1.5 stars
"Uj oh its mabis" lacked any sort of cohesive storytelling. It felt like a jumbled mess of random scenes with no clear plot or character development. The humor was forced and fell flat, and the overall pacing was off. I found myself bored and disinterested throughout the entire film. Definitely not worth the time or money.
