Previously Simon Cowell had given him the advice of going bigger, but for his performance in Tuesday’s quarterfinals episode Eric instead decided to stay true to himself by sticking to close-up magic. His live act consisted of making famous monuments and locales appear on cards, then magically making those cards transform into tiny three-dimensional models. Julianne Hough: “I mean, I didn’t at first know what we were watching and then I realize that what we do is so specific. I don’t know, I’m a little confused, I’m gonna be honest. I do think that was a massive reveal at the end. Can somebody go before me? I have to process.”
Simon Cowell: “Look, Eric, I’d say your definition of what’s big and my definition of big is slightly different, because I thought something ginormous was gonna come out in the end. I really hate being negative tonight but I’m gonna be negative right now. I haven’t got a bloody clue what was going on there, sorry.”
Howie Mandel: “You know what? I’m gonna be honest with you. It might be confusing for us because the people at home should know there are cameras between you and us so we have to watch it way up on a monitor. I thought you’re probably one of the best close-up magicians I’ve ever seen in my life. That being said, your presentation is very — like, you don’t let us know — you look more confused. You make something appear and you go, ‘Oh.” That’s like, ‘Did you hear how good my judging is?’ But I think you’re one of the best I’ve ever seen.”
Gabrielle Union: “I mean, listen, your fellow competitors, other magicians call you one of the best magicians in the world, and I’m going to lean on them right now. I think perhaps we were all a little confused, but it also has to do with our vantage point, and it is a kind of hard to see. At the end of the day you pulled out something that was unreal, that we’ve never seen before, so let’s go with that.”
In his “AGT” live blog, our recapper John Benutty had this to say about the performance: “Eric Chien‘s act tonight was more close-up magic involving postcards, a map and some figurines of iconic buildings that he managed to make appear in multiple sleight of hand movements. Julianne was confused about what she saw, but Simon cleared it up by telling him that he made it seem like something ‘ginormous’ was going to happen at the end but it didn’t. The rest of the panel was equally confused, leaving it unclear if he’ll advance despite the notion that he’s one of the best magicians in the world.”

As time went by, his urge of performing on stage instead of being backstage got stronger. At about 2016, he started making his own props. He started performing in front of big audience from about October of 2018, so he still feels nervous when having to perform in front of a huge crowd. He was called back to Taiwan for military service in 2015. He had to serve in the army for a year. During that time, he could't do any thing out of military duties, including magic. - John - 2 stars - I was really disappointed with the Dept 56 Witch Hollow set. The quality of the figurines was subpar, with some of them already showing signs of wear and tear. I wouldn't recommend it, especially for the price.
