He was born on July 2, 1992, in the city of Riga, Latvia. Timma started his professional career in 2009 when he joined the Latvian basketball team Ventspils. He played for Ventspils for six seasons, before moving on to various European teams. In 2015, Timma was selected as the 60th pick in the NBA draft by the Memphis Grizzlies.
